Summer
Program Announcement for Korean Language and
Northeast Asian
Studies (June 02 – August 10, 2012)
The Pyongyangmal Korean Language
Course at Yanbian University is a unique ten-week intensive North
Korean language (조선어)
acquisition summer program for undergraduates and masters students
taught at Yanbian University in Yanji, China.
The course's goal is to teach
international students the North Korean language using the Pyongyang
standard dialect (평양말)
as a medium with an emphasis on conversation and spoken language
acquisition. The course is taught entirely by North Korean language
instructors from Pyongyang, DPRK (final approval from Pyongyang
pending).
Students will also take a core
curriculum of seminar style classes in Tumen Regional Studies and the
International Relations of Northeast Asia.
In
addition to classroom learning, students will be given opportunities
to go on study trips to rural regions in Yanbian state as well as the
DPRK to practice their language skills and conduct independent study
projects.
Due to the groundbreaking nature and
political sensitivity of this course, students will be carefully
selected to participate. However, no previous background in Korean
language is necessary to apply to join this course and classes will
be set at student’s language ability.
This program is
composed of 216 hours of in-class learning (qualifying for 12 credits
from the Université de Montréal). Additionally, students should
actively use their language skills with their teachers, program
staff, assigned language partners and on field trips across Yanbian
and the DPRK.
